Architect Marcus Coelen receives the German Architecture Award in recognition of his design for converting the library of the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing in Berlin.

Markus Coelen, speaking about his concept:
“The idea of reshaping the world of roller shelving came after years of collaboration with the Zambelli company. I had received the commission to equip the library at the Federal Institute for Materials Testing BAM with a ground-breaking shelving system and to replace the dusty index card system at BAM with a digital book archive. What we had in mind was that the library users should be able to use an app to search for a book by themselves and find it automatically. No sooner said than done! Not only did we install four electrically driven sliding shelving systems in the library, they were also given an innovative and attractive cladding with aluminium sheets. The electric drive works like a model railway. This technology from Zambelli and our ideas of a sophisticated exterior have effectively created a completely new product.”
